STAPLES Center Prepares to Make Ice On the Last Day of June Construction Crew Pours Arena's Slab Floor for Hockey Rink
A STAPLES Center construction milestone:
Just over 400 cubic yards of cement will be poured to create the 100' x 200' slab floor in the center of STAPLES Center. This is the total area that will constitute the surface that the ice hockey rink will be frozen over.
The 8" thick cement slab will completely cover over seven miles of pipe that will ultimately freeze the slab floor and enable the ice surface to be formed.
Workers will begin pouring the cement at 3:00 AM and anticipate finishing the process by mid morning.
Also visible are nearly 1,000 upper bowl seats that have been installed over the last week.
