Los Angeles, Calif. (April 16, 2012) - With the Los Angeles Clippers now joining the Los Angeles Lakers in qualifying for the 2012 NBA Playoffs (clinched by virtue of a Houston Rockets loss earlier this evening), the halls and locker rooms of STAPLES Center will undoubtedly be even busier in the coming weeks as all three of arena's anchor tenants have now qualified for the playoffs for the first time in the arena's history. Having already begun their march to the Stanley Cup, the Los Angeles Kings currently hold a commanding 3-0 lead in their first round Stanley Cup Playoff battle with the Vancouver Canucks with hopes of advancing to round two with a Game 4 victory at STAPLES Center on Wednesday, April 18th. On Friday, April 13th the Los Angeles Lakers clinched a playoff berth with a 103-97 win over the Denver Nuggets.
Since STAPLES Center opened in October 1999, only six times have two of the arena's anchor tenants been in the playoffs at the same time. Five times the Lakers and Kings were in the playoffs in the same year (1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2009-2010, and 2010-2011) and once the Lakers and Clippers shared the playoff stage in the same year, which was in 2006. 2004-05 was the lone year that none of the teams made the playoffs, but also the year NHL did not have Stanley Cup playoffs due to a lockout.
STAPLES Center has proven to be a home court advantage for the Lakers, Clippers and Kings. The Lakers, who in June 2010, captured their fifth NBA Championship since moving to STAPLES Center (the 16th in franchise history), also capped-off each of their first three seasons in the arena by also winning NBA Championships. Including the current playoff run the Kings have made the playoffs six out of the twelve seasons and have also set franchise records for attendance and sell outs. The Clippers have now clinched playoff berths twice since moving to STAPLES Center, once in 2006 and now in 2012. With emergence of Blake Griffin as an NBA superstar and acquiring Chris Paul, the Clippers are sure to be a force to reckon with this post season and in the future.
\"This is an incredible time of year for us here at STAPLES Center. To have all three teams make the playoffs is such an enormous accomplishment,\" said Lee Zeidman, Sr. Vice President and General Manager, STAPLES Center, Nokia Theatre and L.A. LIVE. \"We are hoping all three teams make deep runs into the playoffs and ultimately we would love to have the LA Kings win the Stanley Cup and have the Lakers or Clippers win the NBA Championship. All in all, this playoff run positively impacts our employees, vendors, sponsors, the restaurants and hotels at L.A. LIVE and all the other businesses in and around downtown L.A.\"
