OSCAR DE LA HOYA TO RECEIVE A STATUE OUTSIDE OF STAPLES CENTER
May 1, 2008May 1, 2008 (Los Angeles, Calif.) - During a press conference yesterday for the much anticipated Oscar De La Hoya vs. Steve Forbes bout this Saturday, May 3rd at The Home Depot Center, in Carson, CA, it was announced by Dan Beckerman, CFO, AEG and Richard Schaefer, De La Hoya's Golden Boy Business Partner that there will soon be a "larger-than-life-size," bronzed specially created statue of boxing superstar Oscar De La Hoya outside the world famous STAPLES Center.
De La Hoya's statue will be placed among two other legendary Los Angeles athletes in the Los Angeles Lakers' Earvin 'Magic' Johnson and Los Angeles Kings' Wayne Gretzky. Johnson and Gretzky both changed the face and history of sports in Los Angeles, and AEG, the owners and operators of STAPLES Center believe that Los Angeles native Oscar De La Hoya rightfully deserves a statue in front of the sports and entertainment center of the world.
"Oscar's legendary career and tremendous popularity in his home town of Los Angeles make him one of the city's most popular and important athletes of all time and certainly makes him worthy of this very special tribute at STAPLES Center," commented Beckerman, on-hand to participate in the announcement.
"Joining Magic Johnson and Wayne Gretzky, both unbelievable sports icons, outside of STAPLES Center is a tribute that is extremely fitting for an athlete as popular both in and out of the ring as Oscar," said Lee Zeidman, Sr. Vice President & General Manager, STAPLES Center.
When told of the honor during yesterday's press conference, a visibly surprised and proud De La Hoya commented, "I'm going to drive by it everyday."
De La Hoya, winner of 6 world titles and an Olympic gold medal during his 17-year career grew up in Los Angeles and has become a sports legend and icon in the sport of boxing. He participated in STAPLES Center's first ever boxing match when he took on Shane Mosley for the WBC Welterweight title on June 17, 2000.
The installation date and unveiling ceremony date are still to be determined.
